Assorted Clan History

(Maintaining care that all clans, while canon, will not include canon members.)
Otsutsuki - For countless eons, the Ōtsutsuki clan have been travelling throughout dimensions seeking out worlds cultivated with the God Tree. Once they find such a world, they harvest the god trees' fruit so that they can use its chakra to gain power and prolong their lives. In the case of Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and their ancestors, they would remain on a world until the God Tree was dead and the world could no longer support life, at which point they would seek out a new one. In the case of Kaguya, she chose to settle on the world she found, Earth, and began fortifying it for whenever Momoshiki and the others would come for the fruit of Earth's God Tree.
After consuming one of the God Tree's fruit, Kaguya used the chakra she gained to end the constant war of the Earth's human population. World peace was achieved and humanity initially regarded Kaguya as a benevolent deity. However, Kaguya's method of maintaining the peace by enslaving the world in a dream was viewed as a despotic misuse of her power. When she then started converting those trapped in dreams into a White Zetsu Army - which she planned to use to oppose Momoshiki's forthcoming arrival - the popular perception of Kaguya shifted from that of a goddess to that of a demon. Yet the human population could not oppose her.
In time, Kaguya gave birth to twin sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, both of whom were born with chakra of their own. Kaguya grew jealous that they inherited some of her power and so merged with the Earth's God Tree to try and take it back, in the process becoming a monster called the Ten-Tails. In the anime, her sons also discovered she was converting humans into White Zetsu, and confronted her about it. The Ten-Tails terrorised the world until Hagoromo and Hamura defeated it with their Six Paths — Chibaku Tensei, thus creating the Moon. The Ten-Tails' chakra was sealed into Hagoromo while its husk, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, was placed on the Moon. Hamura relocated to the Moon with most of Earth's other Ōtsutsuki settlers so that they could guard the Demonic Statue and so that they would not interfere with Hagoromo's plans for the human population.
Humanity revered Hagoromo for his role in stopping the Ten-Tails and came to regard him as the "Sage of Six Paths". He shared his chakra with them and taught them ninshū, a way by which they could use their chakra to understand each other and preserve the peace. Towards the end of his life, he divided his chakra into the nine tailed beasts, his way of ensuring that the Ten-Tails and thus Kaguya would never be reborn. Before he died, he passed over his eldest son, Indra, and entrusted his mission of peace to his youngest son, Asura. Hamura would also die, but not before entrusting his fellow Ōtsutsuki with watching over humanity.
Ōtsutsuki Clan War
The Main family defeated by the Branch family.
Hagoromo and Hamura's respective legacies were corrupted over the following millennium: on Earth, Hagoromo's son Indra re-purposed ninshū into ninjutsu, which the humans and the Ōtsutsuki's own descendants (the Senju, Uzumaki, Uchiha, Hyūga, and Kaguya clans) used for war, initiating the age of shinobi; on the Moon, the Ōtsutsuki split into "Main" and "Branch" families, the latter of whom wrongly believed that Hamura wanted them to destroy the Earth if humans were found to be unworthy of Hagoromo's teachings. The Branch family warred against the Main family over their different interpretations and eventually emerged victorious, though they were left on the brink of extinction from the fighting.
Aside from Toneri, it isn't clear if other members of the Ōtsutsuki clan still formally exist alive, however, by Kinshiki's account it is suggested that they are still operative.
Momoshiki's Byakugan
The clan's main dōjutsu, the Byakugan.
The original Ōtsutsuki have pale complexions, with horns on their head also being common. Beyond appearances, however, it is difficult to discuss the Ōtsutsuki since not all of them possess the same abilities and the abilities that they do possess predate the modern terminology used by shinobi. All Ōtsutsuki have possessed at least one inborn skill, the Byakugan being the most prevalent with the potential of awakening the Tenseigan; Kaguya has the Rinne Sharingan and a predecessor ability of the Shikotsumyaku; Hagoromo and Momoshiki both have the Rinnegan, the former of which, in the anime, awakened it after manifesting the Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan. Another ability in the anime was the Wood Release as seen by Asura Ōtsutsuki.
Momoshiki claims that the Ōtsutsuki's greatest skill is their ability to use chakra, gaining strength, retain youth, and long life by ingesting it. Indeed, during the Fourth Shinobi World War, those with the Ten-Tails' chakra and even Kaguya herself are impervious to almost every shinobi skill and it is only by using Hagoromo's Six Paths chakra that she is ultimately defeated. Ōtsutsuki seem to remain unprecedentedly resilient even after they die: Hagoromo's soul lives on through his chakra, which itself travels through time so that he might help solve some of the issues that lingered after his death; Hamura's soul manifests before Hinata Hyūga for a similar purpose, giving her the means of stopping Toneri; Indra and Asura's chakra are repeatedly reborn in their descendants so that they can try to settle their age-old competition; Momoshiki's spirit remained intact even after his body was destroyed and was able to say his last words to Boruto, as well as leave a mark on his palm.
The Ōtsutsuki are very resourceful, evidenced by their ability to easily travel through different dimensions since before recorded history. They were able to colonise the Moon by creating the Tenseigan, which they further strengthened over the centuries by storing their Byakugan within it. From the Tenseigan they receive light, a habitable environment for themselves and other flora and fauna, power for their equipment, and the ability to control the Moon's movements. They can also use the Tenseigan to remotely control their automatons, a far more advanced precursor of the shinobi's Puppet Technique. When they were alive, Hagoromo and Hamura each used different seals to grant or restrict chakra, some of which persist or are rediscovered long after their deaths.
Uchiha - The Uchiha are descendants of Indra Ōtsutsuki, the elder son of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. Through Indra, the Uchiha inherited Hagoromo's "eyes", granting them powerful spiritual energy and chakra. As part of the so-called "Curse of Hatred" first displayed by Indra, Uchiha are subject to powerful emotions: these emotions typically start as love for a friend or family member that then become overpowering hatred when the object of their love is lost. This loss, whether actually experienced or merely threatened, awakens an Uchiha's Sharingan. It is due to the Sharingan that the Uchiha have received much of their fame and notoriety.
The Uchiha have been fighting the Senju clan for centuries, a rivalry that traces back to the days of Indra and his younger brother, Asura. When the Sage of Six Paths was dying, he selected Asura as his successor, believing Asura's desire for peace through love was better than Indra's peace through power. Indra, driven by his Curse of Hatred, fought Asura to claim what he believed was his birthright. The Uchiha and Senju, descendants of Indra and Asura respectively, continued their battle through the centuries, though none still remembered this reason for their conflict.
The Uchiha during the Warring States Period.
By the time of the Warring States Period, the Uchiha and Senju had emerged as the strongest shinobi clans in the world. When one of the fledgling countries of the era would hire the Uchiha to fight in their wars, the opposing side would hire the Senju. The constant warfare between their clans only fueled their hatred, with all Uchiha owing the death of a loved one to an Senju and vice versa. But centuries of conflict began to wear on members of the clans.
Grandfire Ball
Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique, the signature technique of the Uchiha.
The Uchiha were known for having an innate aptitude for all combat-oriented skills and an advanced growth rate. They also have an especially potent chakra quality as well as a natural affinity for the fire nature transformation; Uchiha are not truly considered adults until they can successfully perform the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique. Uchiha also frequently use ninja tools in combat, being best known for their use of shuriken.
The Sharingan
The Uchiha clan are most feared for their dōjutsu-style kekkei genkai, the Sharingan. They can use their Sharingan to see chakra, cast various genjutsu, and, most infamously, copy opponents' jutsu. The Sharingan is such a versatile ability that many ninja consider it wiser to flee than to face an Uchiha in one-on-one combat. Sharingan can be evolved into Mangekyō Sharingan by experiencing loss of a loved one, granting the user new and more powerful jutsu. Overuse of the Mangekyō eventually robs the Mangekyō of its sight, something that can only be restored by receiving another's eyes, preferably a sibling's, to create "eternal" Mangekyō. The Mangekyō's mechanics were long poorly misunderstood by the Uchiha, causing many to personally kill their loved ones to gain power.
Senju - The Senju are descendants of Asura Ōtsutsuki, the younger son of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. Through Asura, the Senju inherited the Hagoromo's "body", granting them a powerful life force and chakra. Unlike most other clans, the Senju never developed a trademark ability or style of combat, its members instead being equally proficient in all the ninja arts. It is from this balance that they acquired their name, "Senju" (千手, Literally meaning: "a thousand skills", "a thousand hands"), in reference to their being "the clan with a thousand skills" (「千の手を持つ一族」, "sen no te o motsu ichizoku").
The Uzumaki and Senju clans.
The Senju are distant relatives of the Uzumaki clan, and for that reason the two clans remained close allies throughout the years. Members at times married between clans, as with Hashirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki, and the Uzumaki would provide fūinjutsu whenever the Senju needed one performed. More distantly, the Senju are also related to the Uchiha clan, who descend from Hagoromo's elder son, Indra. Whereas Indra believed peace could be achieved through power, Asura believed peace could be achieved through love, a difference of mindset that caused them to battle over inheritance to the Sage's ways during their lifetimes. Their battle continued through the generations to their descendants, though neither the Senju nor the Uchiha remembered this reason for their conflict.
Uzumaki - The Uzumaki, being descendants of Asura Ōtsutsuki, also shared distant blood relation with the Senju clan. Through the years, the Uzumaki and Senju kept close ties, with members at times marrying between clans, as with Hashirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki. Following the founding of Konohagakure at the end of the Warring States Period, the Senju chose to symbolise their clans' friendship by adding the Uzumaki's emblem to Konoha's flak jackets. Konoha and the Uzumaki's own Uzushiogakure remained close allies over the following decades, with the Uzumaki providing fūinjutsu (among other things) to Konoha whenever there was a need. In time, the Uzumaki Clan's Mask Storage Temple was even constructed on Konoha's outskirts.
Uzumaki Clan Temple
An abandoned Uzumaki temple.
The Uzumaki's skill with fūinjutsu earned them both respect and fear throughout the ninja world. At some point after Kushina Uzumaki immigrated to Konoha, some of the world's nations banded together to destroy Uzushiogakure, believing the village was too powerful to be allowed to continue. The survivors of Uzushio's destruction went into hiding and spread throughout the world.
Uzumaki naturally possess incredibly strong life forces, granting them tremendous stamina and vitality. As such, they have very long lifespans and likewise seem to age slower; Mito Uzumaki was born before the founding of Konoha yet lived well into the reign of the Third Hokage while still retaining colouring in her hair. This also enables them to survive and endure much more severe injuries while likewise able to recover from injuries and exhaustion with much greater efficiency in short periods of time. These traits are strong enough to survive the removal of tailed beasts, although they are still left severely weakened afterwards.
Heal Bite
Uzumaki also have the ability to quickly heal themselves and others, through consumption of their chakra. It is dangerous, however, to use this ability too regularly. At least one member, Karin, has also displayed a unique sensory ability as well as the ability to suppress their chakra signature making them undetectable.
Adamantine Sealing Chains
The Uzumaki were most famed for their fūinjutsu, the seal of which typically appears as a spiral crest reminiscent of their clan's symbol. Some members also possessed a unique form of chakra with special properties which made them especially well-suited to become jinchūriki as well as produce adamantine chains made from their own chakra. Few Uzumakis have actually shown the ability to make these chains without Bijuu chakra
By the time of the Warring States Period, the Senju and Uchiha had emerged as the strongest shinobi clans in the world. When one of the fledgling countries of the era would hire the Senju to fight in their wars, the opposing side would hire the Uchiha. The constant warfare between their clans only fueled their hatred, with all Senju owing the death of a loved one to an Uchiha and vice versa. But centuries of conflict began to wear on members of the clan; Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha met as children and became friends, bonding over their disapproval of the combat and death that they and their younger brothers were constantly subjected to and dreaming of a time when children wouldn't need to fight. Unable to do anything about the world at their age, Madara turned away from their dreams.
Senju Clan
Their unified clans made a pact with the Land of Fire to create a hidden village within its borders, what would become Konohagakure. Other clans settled in Konoha to share their peace and Konoha's model was adopted across the shinobi world. The villagers of Konoha selected 'Araki' to be their First Hokage, Konoha's leader.
It isn't clear if the Senju still formally exist as a clan, as no living Konoha villagers are known to still bear the name. Konoha Hiden suggests that they are no longer active, as Kiba Inuzuka only recognises the name from history classes. Despite this, the Senju's influence continues to live on in all of Konoha's inhabitants, chiefly through the Senju's Will of Fire.
Hyuga - The Hyūga clan are descendants from the Ōtsutsuki clan, specifically from Hamura Ōtsutsuki's lineage. As a result, they are also distant cousins of the Uchiha, Senju, Uzumaki, and Kaguya clans. They are considered to be one of, if not currently, the most powerful clan in Konohagakure. Their fame and prowess stretches far and wide, leading others to both praise and covet their abilities.
The clan is separated into two parts: the main house (宗家, sōke) and the branch house (分家, bunke), a system that protects the secrets of the Byakugan from outsiders. The main house runs the family while the branch house protects it. The members of the branch house are branded with a cursed seal upon the third birthday of the heir to the main house. This seal gives the main house members absolute control over the branch members, because they can destroy the branch members' brain cells with a simple hand seal, or cause them great pain to punish them. This seal also makes sure the secret of the Hyūga's Byakugan is safe, because it seals the Byakugan after the wearer of the seal dies. Because they are essentially servants, simply because of their birth order or heritage, some branch house members are hostile to those of the main house.
In the past, there have been several attempts on the part of Kumogakure to acquire the dōjutsu of this clan. This even culminated in the death of the would-be-thief: the Head Ninja of Kumogakure and the demands of Hiashi's corpse who had killed him according to the stipulations in the peace treaty that the two villages had signed. Ultimately, Hizashi was the one who sacrificed his life for the village and clan, sealing away his Byakugan as he died and avoiding war. This event would become known as the Hyūga Affair.
It has been noted that this clan possesses more than one kekkei genkai. Unique to the Hyūga's main family, they had inherited the powerful chakra from their ancestor Hamura Ōtsutsuki directly. Only those who possess this special chakra, can touch the Tenseigan without suffering its side effects.
The Byakugan.
The Hyūga are renowned for possessing the highly coveted Byakugan (白眼, Literally meaning: White Eye, Meaning (Viz): All Seeing White Eye), a kekkei genkai feared for the great visual prowess that it grants its wielder. The first ability of the Byakugan gives the user a near 360º field of vision, except for one blind spot at the back of the neck above the third thoracic vertebra. The second ability is being able to see through solid objects, and can use a degree of telescopic sight. The distance and the degree of telescopic sight varies from person to person, and can be improved. In Part I, Neji was able to see an area of 50 metres, but later he increases his visual range to at least 800 metres, while Hinata's range in Part II stretches at least as far as 10 km. However, the Byakugan cannot see through certain barriers, such as the Four Black Fogs Formation used by the Sound Four. The third and one of the greatest uses of the Byakugan is the ability to see chakra, its flow, as well as the chakra circulation system inside the body with great detail.
The Gentle Fist Art.
Members of the clan are instructed in the use of the Gentle Fist style, which uses the Byakugan to view the opponent's Chakra Pathway System and deal precise blows to disable and impede the flow of chakra. Due to training in this style, Hyūga clan members tend to have excellent chakra control. This is emphasised in techniques that utilise this chakra control, as well as the nuances of the Gentle Fist Art. Because of this, the Gentle Fist is regarded as Konoha's strongest taijutsu style.
Another ability possessed by members of this clan grants them the innate ability to expel chakra from every tenketsu in their body, allowing them to fully utilise chakra with attacks such as the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven and the Gentle Fist Art One Blow Body techniques. This allows descendants of the clan, such as Boruto to use the Gentle Fist despite lacking the Byakugan. In addition, the clan's techniques outside the basic Gentle Fist fighting style, like the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms etc., are only taught to members of the main house. Some, however, have bypassed this restriction by learning them on their own through basic observation.
Kaguya - The Kaguya clan were descendants of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, and some possessed the kekkei genkai Shikotsumyaku from Kaguya's original bone-manipulating ability. This ability was so powerful that even the war-loving Kaguya clan feared it.
The clan was noted for being very savage and battle-hungry, having no tactics when entering battle that they initiated simply to show off their ferocity. Even when surrounded and completely outmatched, they refused to back down, preferring to fight to the death simply to entertain their own bloodlust to the last.
The Kaguya clan was noted for being very savage, relying on raw brute force and no battle tactics. Because of this, they are fearless (if not insane or delusional), recklessly entering the battlefield and refusing to retreat even when defeat is clear, simply for the thrill of slaughter.
Shikotsumyaku
As descendants of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, a select few were able to inherit the Shikotsumyaku kekkei genkai, a derivative of their ancestor's All-Killing Ash Bones Kekkei Mōra, which allowed them to manipulate their skeletal structure to weaponize bones for battle. This ability was so powerful, regarded as the ultimate taijutsu ability, that the other members of the clan feared it.
Hozuki - The members of this clan possess the ability to turn their bodies into liquid state using the Hydrification Technique. This ability however seems to require that they stay well hydrated at all times and as such at least two known members are known to carry water bottles around with them. It has also produced at least one Mizukage of the village.
Sarutobi - After Konohagakure's formation following the Warring States Period, the Sarutobi were amongst the first set of clans to ally themselves with the Senju and Uchiha-founded village, alongside the Shimura clan. Not much is known of this clan but, in order to strengthen the unity between the Akimichi, Nara, and Yamanaka clans, it has become a tradition that one of the Sarutobi give each of the members of the current Ino–Shika–Chō trio special earrings when they swear their oaths.
The Sarutobi are famous for their high willpower, and exceptional strength. The clan also uses hiden ninjutsu involving the Fire Release nature transformation.
Hoshigaki - The Hoshigaki Clan (干柿一族, Hoshigaki Ichizoku) is a shinobi clan from Kirigakure. All known members of this clan appear to have shark-like features such as sharp, pointed teeth and facial features that resemble gills.
Nara - The clan has kept a book with various medicine preparations and effects for generations, implying that they are skilled in the area of medicine and healing arts. Among the medicine described in this book are the secret pills used by the Akimichi clan. The Nara also have a special bond with the deer of the Nara Clan Forest, and only members of the clan are allowed inside without the deer attacking unless an outsider is given permission.
The Nara clan has a special relationship with the Akimichi and the Yamanaka clan. For several generations, members of these three families have formed "Ino–Shika–Chō" trios, named after the first part of the names of the members with the Nara members being the "Shika" in the trio. To strengthen the unity between the three clans, a member of the Sarutobi clan will give them special earrings to present to each generation head when they are promoted to chūnin after which they will swear their oaths. The earrings also symbolise that they are considered adults by their respective clans. The clan members also seem to favour wearing their hair in ponytails.
Chinoike - During the Warring States Period, the Chinoike were one of the many mercenary ninja clans active in the Land of Lightning. At some point, a woman of the Chinoike clan married the Land of Lightning's daimyō. The daimyō's first wife became jealous of her, and when the daimyō died soon after their marriage the first wife blamed the woman and her clan for the daimyō's death. Many believed the first wife's lies, causing the entire Chinoike clan to be banished from the country. The Uchiha clan were hired to carry out this task, and they forced the Chinoike clan to settle in the Valley of Hell in the Land of Hot Water.
The Valley of Hell was thought to be uninhabitable. Ninja from the nearby Yugakure checked in on the Chinoike clan a few months after they were relocated to the valley and found them drinking what appeared to be blood; it was actually only water, turned red by minerals in the earth. Unwilling to investigate further, Yugakure declared the Valley of Hell off limits. Over the years, the valley's location was forgotten and the Chinoike clan faded from history. In truth, the Chinoike were able to survive, surviving off the valley's minimal wildlife and resources and enjoying decades of peace.
Though living peacefully, the Chinoike clan had their disagreements. Being forced to live so closely together for so long caused even minor arguments to erupt into violence; in the anime, the tipping point was whether or not the clan should seek vengeance against the Uchiha clan for exiling them there.
Ketsuryūgan
The Chinoike are famous for their Ketsuryūgan, a dōjutsu that, when active, makes their eyes appear blood-red. The Ketsuryūgan allows them to perform powerful genjutsu, of comparable strength to the Uchiha clan's Sharingan. They can also use the Ketsuryūgan to manipulate liquids that have high iron contents, such as blood or the water that naturally flows in the Valley of Hell. Before they can manipulate such liquids, it is necessary that they imbue it with their own chakra.
Aburame - The clan members may also carry additional insects in jars or gourds with them on missions. The insects can leave and enter their host's body through various pores. They feed on chakra as a food source, making them quite deadly. The relationship between the shinobi and the insects is mutually beneficial. The host grants the insects shelter and allows them to feed off their chakra, their body becoming a living hive of tens of thousands of these insects, and in return the insects do the user's bidding, allowing the shinobi to perform ninjutsu-like techniques without the use of hand seals or chakra conversion. A major defining trait of the Aburame clan is that all of its known members' eyes are obscured usually by glasses, as well as they wear clothing that usually cover up most of their body.
A female insect can be left on a target, which then can be tracked by smell by the male insect, or scout insects can be sent out and return to tell the host information about the area. For this reason, Aburame clan members are experts in espionage; they can communicate with the insects, and the insects specialise in stealth because they make no noise or motion during combat. In addition to utilising insects in battle, the Aburame clan also studies insects. In the anime it was shown that they were rivals of the Kamizuru, a clan of bee users, until they defeated them in battle. Even though their insect-related techniques are known only amongst the clan, Aburame do not limit themselves to using just a single type of insects, in fact a select few used an insect considered rare even among the clan's members known as rinkaichū. To date, only Shikuro and Torune are known to possess it. Another rare insect used by the clan are the kidaichū, an insect which reacts so exponentially to chakra that they grow rapidly in size when exposed to incorrect amounts of it, consuming their victim from the inside out. As noted by Shino, it makes the insects troublesome ones to host in the body. Other insect breeds known to be used by the Aburame clan are the shōkaichū, which can detect chakra signatures and are used as trackers, and the kochū, which can infect enemies with a deadly paralysing poison.
It has also been shown that they possess the ability to communicate with other bugs and insects, as seen when Shino used what looked like a bee to gather information for him during the Chūnin Exams.
The Bikōchū (微香虫, Literally meaning: minute scent insect) is an insect that was once used by the Aburame clan in the great ninja wars. It was becoming an endangered species, however, so they let it live in a special bug habitat, uninhabited by humans. Two of the female's distinguishing traits are its long nose and its blue eyes, but a giant bug-like creature that looks exactly like it is sometimes confused with the real thing. It also has an incredible sense of smell, stronger than even that of a dog.
Kidaichū Mushikui
The kidaichū (寄大蟲, Literally meaning: Parasitic Giant Insects) are a species of beetle-like insects that are bred and utilised by select members of the Aburame clan as part of their Parasitic Destruction Insect Technique. Though initially small in size, if provided with the incorrect amount of chakra, these insects immediately begin to devour the flesh of their host, causing them to undergo rapid growth to ultimately giant proportions.
The kikaichū (寄壊蟲, English TV: Parasitic Insects, Literally meaning: Parasitic Destruction Insects) are a species of small, beetle-like insects that are bred and utilised exclusively by the Aburame clan, forming the basis for their unique techniques.
The kochū (蠱虫, Literally meaning: worm insect) are a species of insect used by members of the Aburame clan, seen in Book of Dark Night. They can produce a poison that will paralyse their victims and kill them a short while later; the poison disappears upon death, preventing it from being found during autopsies. Danzō Shimura notes kochū are perfect for performing assassinations, as they are as imperceptible as mosquitoes yet as deadly as scorpions.
Venomous Beetle Technique
Rinkaichū (燐壊虫, Literally meaning: Phosphorus Destruction Insect) are a breed of nano-sized, venomous insects (ナノサイズの毒蟲, nanosaizu no dokumushi, Viz: nano-sized venom beetles) hosted by a select few members of the Aburame clan. These bugs destroy their enemies' cells, causing excruciating pain in the process.
The shōkaichū (消壊虫, Literally meaning: Neutralising Destruction Insect) are one of several species of insect used by members of the Aburame clan. They resemble worms. They can dig into the ground and locate chakra signatures that they then report to their respective Aburame.
Yamanaka - The members of this clan specialise in mind-centred techniques which makes them experts at intelligence gathering, espionage and ultimately interrogation. They have also displayed sensory abilities and their techniques include transferring consciousness, reading minds and communicating telepathically. The flower symbol of this clan is the bush clover which symbolises a "positive love". Most members of the Yamanaka clan wear their hair in a long ponytail, which appears to be traditional.
The Yamanaka clan has a special relationship with the Akimichi and Nara clan. For generations, members of these three families have formed an "Ino–Shika–Chō Trio", named after the first part of the names of the members. The Yamanaka members are the "Ino" in the trio. To strengthen the unity between the three clans, a member of the Sarutobi clan will give them special earrings to present to each generation head when they are promoted to chūnin after which they will swear their oaths. The earrings also symbolise that they are considered adults by their respective clans.
Kurama - The Kurama Clan (鞍馬一族, Kurama Ichizoku) is a clan of extremely skilled genjutsu users, exclusive to the anime. This talent in genjutsu is due to the kekkei genkai that the clan possesses. However, once every few generations, a member of the clan will be born with such enormous skill in genjutsu that their illusions causes the brain to make anything that happens to the victim within the genjutsu physically real, allowing the clan member to potentially kill their opponents with genjutsu.
Such frightening power is not without its drawbacks, however. The user can rarely control the full extent of their abilities, and as such their subconscious will often regulate that power, leading to the creation of a second personality in control of that power. This personality then overwhelms the original, turning the individual into a monster that is a danger to everyone that surrounds them. They were originally one of the more prominent clans in Konohagakure, but the number of ninja in the clan has severely dwindled.
Inuzuka - The members are given their own canine partner(s) when they reach a certain age. Thereafter, the shinobi and their dog(s) are practically inseparable. The shinobi and canine allies fight using Cooperation Ninjutsu, such as the Fang Passing Fang or Fang Rotating Fang techniques amongst others, that take advantage of their teamwork and their sharp claws and teeth. The clan members are also able to communicate with canines even if unlike Kuromaru, the dogs cannot talk. The members of this clan, much like their canine partners, have greatly enhanced senses, especially their sense of smell. By concentrating chakra to their noses, this sense is amplified to an even greater extent allowing the user to be able to detect, track and monitor targets from a fairly long distance away. The clan's fighting style primarily revolves around their enhanced speed, strength and agility granted by the Four Legs Technique and other canine-based attacks, in conjunction with the tactical advantages granted by their heightened senses.
Kamizuru - Years before the start of the series, they led an attempted invasion by Iwa of Konohagakure, only to be repelled and largely killed by Konoha's more experienced Aburame clan. The Kamizuru were so badly defeated that they lost their status and respect in Iwa and their numbers began to dwindle.
Years later, the last surviving Kamizuru try to restore their former status by locating the First Tsuchikage's secret scroll, which is full of forbidden techniques for bug user ninja. To that end, they set out to find the bikōchū. Konoha's Bikōchū Search Team were also looking for the bikōchū, and thus the two eventually battled. All three of the Kamizuru were defeated by Hinata Hyūga using her recently perfected Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms technique. Suzumebachi attempted one last-ditch attack with a summoned Giant Bee, but was defeated by Naruto's Rasengan.
Akimichi - Members of the clan possess great physical strength and are able to quickly convert calories into chakra, which they then use in their various secret techniques. Most of these techniques rapidly consume the user's chakra during use, and maintaining them during a prolonged battle can be tiring. For this reason the Akimichi have high chakra levels and eat a lot in order to build up or replenish their chakra reserves. As a tribute, members of the clan wear the kanji for "food" (食, shoku) on the their clothing. If standard calories aren't enough for a battle, Akimichi can use the clan's Three Coloured Pills to convert excess fat into chakra, at the cost of one's health.
Many Akimichi use a bō as their weapon of choice. These have the ability to lengthen in proportion to their wielder's size. These weapons also have small appendages at the top of them. These clan members have all also been depicted with markings of sorts on their cheeks and most of them have been seen wearing plate armour, both with and without flak jackets.
The Akimichi clan has a special relationship with the Nara and Yamanaka clan. For generations, members of these three families have formed "Ino–Shika–Chō" trios, named after the first part of the names of the members with the Akimichi members being the "Chō" in the trio. To strengthen the unity between the three clans, a member of the Sarutobi clan will give them special earrings to present to each generation head when they are promoted to chūnin after which they will swear their oaths. The earrings also symbolise that they are considered adults by their respective clans.
Kazekage - Not much is known about the clan, with the exception that it has produced several notable members who have held positions of high authority, including the Fourth and Fifth Kazekage, and the village's ambassador.
Members of the Kazekage Clan, just like the majority of shinobi from Sunagakure, are skilled in Wind Release. Select members of the clan also inherit the rare Magnet Release kekkei genkai. With it, they can manipulate large quantities of mineral substances to blanket the battlefield and overwhelm their opponents.
Yuki - The Yuki Clan (雪一族, Yuki Ichizoku) lived in the Land of Water. Some time ago, the country was in the midst of a civil war. In this war, different sides battled each other using ninja in combat, some of whom possessed kekkei genkai. After the war ended, memories of the gruesome battles still lingered in the minds of the people, causing wide-spread persecutions against those with the kekkei genkai. Because of this, the Yuki clan, whose members carried the Ice Release kekkei genkai went into hiding for their own safety.
Iburi - The Iburi Clan (イブリ一族, Iburi Ichizoku) was a seclusive clan that lived underground in the Land of Fire. They had the ability to become smoke at will and still be able to physically interact with the world around them. However, this ability was imperfect, causing them to occasionally transform unintentionally. In their smoke form, they were vulnerable to wind as it caused them to disperse permanently and die. Because of that, clan members did not tend to have long lives, and were forced to live confined in caves or places where the wind is practically non-existent. Instead of tombstones to honour the dead, the clan would plant trees for them, believing their deceased souls would watch over them. They were later able to partially stabilize their ability.
Fuma - The Fūma Clan (風魔一族, Fūma Ichizoku) is a renowned ninja clan, famous in at least Amegakure and the Land of Fire. It is unknown where they hail from. They are well-known as an aggressive clan and fight using their characteristic giant Fūma Shuriken; a large, four-bladed weapon said to possess preeminent sharpness.
The name Fūma (風魔) literally means "Wind Demon" and comes from a real-life ninja clan founded by the legendary Fūma Kotarō. This Fūma Kotarō is said to have defeated and killed the equally legendary samurai Hattori Hanzō
Hagoromo - The Hagoromo Clan (羽衣一族, Hagoromo Ichizoku) is one of the earlier clans which existed during the war-torn era preceding the creation of the hidden villages. While not a great deal is known about them, they were one of the warring factions alongside the Uchiha clan to oppose the Senju clan in battle — an alliance that lead to Kawarama Senju's death, amongst many of his clansmen. During their initial meeting with one another by a riverside, Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha discovered the body of a member of this clan, face-down in the river.
Yotsuki - The Yotsuki Clan (夜月一族, Yotsuki Ichizoku) is a clan from Kumogakure. During the First Raikage's reign they were given land in the Valley of Clouds and Lightning after swearing their loyalty to the village.
Hoki - The Hōki Family (ホウキ族, Hōki-zoku) is a matrilineal shinobi clan (and family) of medical-nin and information gatherers from Sunagakure, who originated in and moved down to the village of Konohagakure. The members of the family are also called "people who work behind the scenes" in the centre of Sunagakure's government. The women of the family don't show their faces without make-up to any man, with the exception of the one they're going to marry.
Shiin - The Shiin Clan was a small shinobi clan from the Land of the Rice Fields, where Orochimaru established the Land of Sound. Despite their size, they had high ideals. After Otogakure was founded, all the skilled members joined Otogakure. But when the requests from the daimyō stopped coming, their leader lost his reason to live and set sight for a gold mine. He and the clan members attacked the village next to the mine, but something went wrong and the clan members began killing the villagers. Menma panicked and tried to escape, but ended up falling off a cliff and losing his memory. He was later saved by Naruto.
The members had a special tattoo on the right upper arm, with the appearance of a purple band circling the arm three times. The tattoo was only visible when the wearer was perspiring.
Kohaku - The Kohaku Clan (Kohaku Ichizoku) was a shinobi clan that had a village near the border of the Land of Fire to that of Amegakure. Despite having their own village, the clan was also seen to be affiliated with Konoha, since one of their members was seen wearing a Konoha flak jacket. The members had the symbol of black futatsudomoe (double tomoe shaped like yin and yang) tattooed on their upper arm with two lines going around it.
Tsuchigumo - The Tsuchigumo Clan (土蜘蛛一族, Tsuchigumo Ichizoku) is a clan that formed a pact with the Third Hokage during the Third Shinobi World War. The clan's leader at that time, En no Gyōja, developed a technique that could wipe out an entire village. By terms of the pact with the Third Hokage, En no Gyōja declared the technique to be forbidden, in exchange for protection provided by Konoha in times of need.
The clan has a small fort on Mount Katsuragi that is surrounded by a barrier, and a field with many hidden traps. Additionally, they also have their own hidden village.
During the Third Shinobi World War the Tsuchigumo clan was hailed as a powerful and proud clan, because they possessed the powerful Tsuchigumo clan kinjutsu. Although they were often targeted for that reason, leading to many clan members being killed and leaving only few remaining clan members who was capable of using the kinjutsu. After that the clan became weak and En no Gyōja and the village elder had disagreements over the clan's survival. This led to the clan splitting into two groups with one in the Tsuchigumo Village and the other at Mount Katsuragi. Only few opted to follow En no Gyōja to Mount Katsuragi.
Yota's Clan - This travelling clan had the ability to manipulate weather, which they used for their trades. Yota was especially good at manipulating the weather among his clan despite of his young age.
They were wanderers by trade, travelling from village to village selling weather. They also practised a ritual to help the individual in the ritual's centre to manipulate the weather.
Shirogane - The Shirogane clan lived on the border of the Land of Wind. They were a small clan with no particularly skilled ninja. Trying to find a source of power to compensate for that, they created puppet walkers. Wielding an army, they survived the Shinobi Wars. But a dark secret was exposed: to develop the puppet walkers, they abducted humans and experimented on them. They were the developers of the Master Puppet, the ultimate puppet walker who have power to destroy nations. But an unexpected event happened: it had its own will. And fearing its immense power, and the prospect that the puppet might one day rebel against its creators, the Shirogane sealed the Master Puppet away into the five Spirit Orbs. The Master Puppet was about to be revived during the rebellion, but the clan was squashed before they could do so. The last survivors hid the Spirit Orbs and after swearing revenge on the Five Great Nations, disappeared.
The Shirogane were said to be comprised of ninja with meager skill compared to the other existing shinobi clans. However, they were highly proficient in the puppet-making arts, as it was their apparent inferiority that led to them developing the Puppet Walkers. These Puppet Walkers are superior to normal puppets in general since they can operate without a nearby puppeteer as they can be manipulated from a distance, and are capable of getting up after receiving multiple hits from the opposition. The Shirogane Three, a trio of the clan's survivors bent on reviving the Master Puppet, and use it as the trigger for clan's revival, were all skilled puppeteers, able to control their puppets in such a way that they could not only copy a target's appearance, but also near-accurately mimic the skills of their targets.
Amagiri - The Amagiri clan founded and led Yumegakure at some point of the past. Later on, the Tenrō clan came, using the Three-Heads' sealing technique as a shield and slowly took over the village. When a Tenrō became village chief, the Amagiri clan's history of oppression began. All the blame for the poverty of the village and the wars that brought even more sacrifices went to the Amagiri and they were exiled from the village. The path they walked after that was truly one of thorns, as Gensui describes it. Because of this, Gensui sought vengeance on the Tenrō, planning to use the Three-Heads to get revenge.
A defining trait of the Amagiri clan is that all its members wear samurai-like attire, usually having pinkish-red and purple colours on them and sometimes a little gold. Many members also wear special clawed-sandals to better move around in the forest. All of them have pinkish-red markings on their faces that differ from person to person, but all have a marking on their lower foreheads, usually a triangle pointing downward.
Many members of this clan use the Poison Mist in battle and also poisonous insects that are roughly the size of large rats. Besides having poisonous stingers, these insects can instantly emit a poison cloud when defeated. Some members have also been shown using a yellow mist that paralyses the target and some carry scrolls that can dispel poison and/or paralysis. Chūnin-level shinobi from the clan have been shown using kusarigama which they can enhance with fire-natured chakra.
Ryu - The Ryū Clan (龍一族, Ryū Ichizoku) was once a powerful clan of Dragon Guardians entrusted with keeping the Dragon Blade and was blessed by the power of the five Genryū, who together fertilised the land belonging to the clan around Mount Koryū. However, due to their clan's history as Dragon Guardians, all members of the clan were bound to the Genryū, signified by small horns on their heads, pointed ears, and, in some cases, facial markings. Because of their appearances, others recognised them immediately as those who had the power of the Genryū on their side, and persecuted them out of fear of the Genryū, exiling the clan and nearly driving them to extinction some time before the First Shinobi World War. The only known remnants of the clan are Akari and her older brother, Kuroma.
Rinha - The Rinha Clan (Rinha Ichizoku) was a clan with specialists in medical ninjutsu. They have performed admirably in the past wars. A survivor named Malice was the best of the clan.
The Rinha clan specialised in medical ninjutsu and were so proficient that they, during past wars, were targeted by shinobi from other countries, seeking to obtain their techniques.
The clan also possessed a Kekkei Genkai which enabled them to absorb chakra from people and create perfect copies of them. They were capable of absorbing the chakra both by direct physical contact or from a distance. Malice showed capable of even doing this through a puppet.
Wasabi - For a long time the Wagarashi family has been their greatest enemy and rival. For many years the two clans have been fighting for the ownership of the Degarashi Port in the Land of Tea. Jirōchō Wasabi is the founder and head of the clan. Idate and Jirōchō have made the Wasabi family strong and he gave them hope. The Wasabi family was able to win the Todoroki Shrine Race, which is held every four years, and won control of the Degarashi Port. Along with the victory, the Wasabi family will take over as the supreme clan of the Land of Tea, while the Wagarashi is broken up for cheating by making a deal with Aoi Rokushō to assassinate Idate.
Taketori - The Taketori Clan (竹取一族, Taketori Ichizoku) is a clan, presumably outside of Konohagakure. While not a great deal is known about them, this clan seems to have close connections to the Hyūga clan for political matters, according to Natsu Hyūga.
Hirasaka - The Hirasaka Clan (比良坂一族, Hirasaka Ichizoku) is one of the three clans that hail from Yumegakure.
A defining trait of the Hirasaka clan is that all its members wear large hoods over their heads and some have it covering their mouths too. They are the only clan in Yumegakure to not have any facial markings or, at least, none have been seen.
Some techniques in this clan include sealing the opponent's chakra or confusing them to the point where they attack their own allies. Some members carry scrolls that can dispel confusion and/or chakra sealing. Some chūnin-level shinobi have been shown to use the Shadow Clone Technique and bombs that release electricity when they explode. Many shinobi are also fairly skilled in taijutsu.
Tenro - The Tenrō clan was responsible for sealing and controlling the Three-Headed Guardian Beast which resulted in them gaining control of Yumegakure. The village's current chief, Enzo, hails from this clan.
The Tenrō clan ninja fighting style revolves mainly around the use of taijutsu and some use of ninja tools. Some members have been shown to use a combat based transformation technique, allowing them to take on a wolf-like creature that enhances their strength and speed, which emphasises their main focus of taijutsu and close combat. Some members of the clan also used unconventional weaponry in the form of large dual-wielded drills, capable of swiftly boring through the earth, thus surprising the opponent, alongside using them as thrusting weapons when battling above ground. Like the Inuzuka clan of Konohagakure, the Tenrō clan makes use of canines in combat by using wolves with a pair of large bladed weapons strapped to their back. The canines use their blades by rearing up onto their hind legs and jump at their targets and spinning around.
Aside from combat skills, the clan also boasted knowledge of a high level sealing technique, which in the past enabled them to imprison the Three-Headed Guardian Beast. While the seal was not shown, its abilities were similar to the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style in that it allows for an opening of the seal with a special key. The key itself, is held by the leader of the village, Enzo.
Wagarashi - The Wagarashi Family (ワガラシ一家, Wagarashi Ikka) is a clan in the Land of Tea. They are one of two clans who wants ownership over the Degarashi Port.
For many years, The Wagarashi family have had a rivalry with the Wasabi Family, in which they have fought for the ownership of the Degarashi Port. It is led by its founder, Kyūroku Wagarashi. The two families held a race called, Todoroki Shrine Race, to determine the ownership of the port. Another member of this clan is Fukusuke Hikyakuya, a runner who participated in the race on the clans behalf. Kyūroku had a long time deal with the Daimyō's minister, bribing him on their behalf. This was ultimately ended when the Tea Daimyō found out about it, where he dismissed his minister and made the Wagarashi family break up.
Kedoin - The Kedōin Clan (祁答院一族, Kedōin Ichizoku) is a small clan led by Agari Kaisen.
Its members have the ability to copy someone's appearance, so well that it can't be exposed by ninken. However, they cannot copy techniques and other abilities. After a few days, the clan member who used the technique returns back to normal.
Kagetsu - The Kagetsu Family hail from Motoyoshi Village within the Land of Fire. The were originally ordinary herb-sellers that, though poor, lived happy lives filled with laughter. When they discovered that the herbs growing in the surrounding mountainside were valuable, the family became rich. They also became serious and laughter disappeared from their lives. Tōbei Kagetsu, the head of the clan, fakes his death in an elaborate attempt to remind his children to smile again.
Kodon - The Kodon Clan (虎呑一族, Kodon Ichizoku) is a clan of the Howling Wolf Village. They are able to make a medicinal form of saigenzai known as Kotarō within their bodies; although only Kodon can do this, it is not a kekkei genkai. They sell Kotarō at their store, Rengyōdō (連翹堂). In the past, members of the Kodon clan saved the village by sealing Rōen into their clan's shrine. Decades later, as the village began contemplating declaring neutrality, Tenma Kodon, the clan's leader, released Rōen in order to try and sway the village against neutrality. Tenma lost control of Rōen during the attack, and both he and his wife died in order to save the village by sealing it into their infant son, Kina. Although they had no actual proof, most of the village assumed Tenma was behind Rōen's attacks and as such the Kodon fell into disfavor. Kina seeks to restore his family's honor.
Kumenoi - The Kumanoi Clan (熊胆一族, Kumanoi Ichizoku) was a clan of the Howling Wolf Village. They accidentally discovered blue fire powder while trying to find a medicine that would grant eternal youth. The Kumanoi profited greatly from the sale of blue fire powder and were also able to use it to help the Howling Wolf Village defeat Amegakure; after the battle, however, the Kumanoi forced the prisoners the village had taken to walk through a field of mines, killing them all. This action placed Tenma Kodon in opposition to the Kumanoi when they started advocating for the Howling Wolf Village to declare neutrality and cease being a hidden village. When, in the midst of the decision, Rōen abruptly attacked the village, the Kumanoi clan believed Tenma was behind the attack. They used their blue fire powder to defend the village from Rōen, but left the village after it was defeated.
Sendo - The Sendō Clan (仙道一族, Sendō Ichizoku) is a clan of the Howling Wolf Village led by Jiryū Sendō. After the village became neutral, the Sendō started selling saigenzai to the villagers, specifically its former shinobi. They seek to learn how to make the strongest saigenzai, Kotarō, which places them in opposition to the Kodon clan.
Utilised Insects
